Spirituality & Consciousness
Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri
This is easily my top 5 books of all time. It can usually be found within arms reach of wherever I'm working. It's a poetic story that maps the spiritual journey we all must take to enlightenment. It begins in the dark wood where the main character is lost and afraid and then is met by a guide who journeys with him into the depths of hell, back up into purgatory and into the 7 levels of heaven. It's full of allegory and symbolism that has helped me tremendously in navigating my own life path, especially during times of transition and confusion. It's a must have resource for any serious spiritual seeker. You can find it on Amazon here.
A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle
This book has by far had the most powerful impact on my own spiritual awakening. I've read it at least 10 times and have listened to hundreds of hours of discourse by Eckhart Tolle over the years. No other spiritual teacher comes close to his ability to explain consciousness and get others to see one's eternal nature like him. In all the years of listening/reading him, I have never heard him repeat himself. His wisdom is truly infinite. You can find it on Amazon here.
The Gospel of Thomas
Although not a book, the Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is an extra-canonical sayings gospel. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Its 114 verses that were spoken by Jesus. There is tremendous wisdom in these writings and I love reviewing them often. They are more gnostic in their view. To me Jesus comes off as more of a wise old shaman, speaking words of wisdom from the dark-side, rather than some Ghandi like figure. These sayings read very similar to "The Wheels of Time" by Carlos Castenada, a book on shamanism. I honestly think this is a more accurate depiction of the one they called the "Lion of Judah". My favorite verse, "I am not your teacher, for you have drank and become intoxicated by the bubbling spring which I have measured out" I think this verse clearly shows that Jesus was probably using psychedelics – probably magic mushrooms – to induce mystical states in his disciples and teach divinity through direct experience. You can find the full list here.
